Beastly 2011

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , on August 21, 2011 by PL

A modern-day take on the “Beauty and the Beast” tale where a New York teen is transformed into a hideous monster in order to find true love.

Director:

Daniel Barnz

Writers:

Daniel Barnz (screenplay), Alex Flinn (novel)

Stars:

Alex Pettyfer, Vanessa Hudgens and Mary-Kate Olsen

Mary Kate play a very dark character in this film out of what most would consider out of character role for her, who betwitches Kyle (Daniel Barnz) and transforms him into what to him would be a “beast” he has 1 year to find someone to love him for him and not who he is or what he looks like.  Shunned by his tv anchor dad who is hung up on looks.  Neal Patrick Harris portrays the blind tutor hired to teach him while he is in seclusion. Vanessa Hudgens  is Lindy, the girl who he chooses to try to make love him and see him for who he really is and not how he looks. This modern version of Beauty and the Beast was nice yet a bit sappy.  In my opinion the characters of Lindy and Kyle should have had much more interaction with each other. More time seemed to be wasted in the film with him following her and then building up the nerve to speak to her than I felt was needed.  All in all it was a nice movie. I do have to say that I really enjoyed the music score to this film.

I give it 4 Kernels out of 6

I give it…

A FULL POPCORN!!

This movie was incredible on so many different levels. Based off the real life story of Bethany Hamilton who lost her arm in a shark attack and has gone on to become a pro surfer.  The visual portion of the film is stunning. Great surf scenes with mild special effects. Even the shark looked real. (i paused it to check it) The acting by AnnaSophia Robb was realistic. There are religious tones throughout the whole movie without being “preachy”, and is based on the family’s actual beliefs. Even Karrie Underwood’s portrayal of Bethany’s Youth Pastor was believable.  This movie really surprised me. I half expected to see a so so movie but was left feeling inspired. I laughed, I got choked up at times. This is a great family movie for all. (I watched it with my 15 year old son who loved it)  No drugs, a little light gore so to speak (blood in water, bloody arm covered with shirt and post amputation of her arm) If you want to sit down and watch a movie that will make you rethink what is possible and the strength of faiths effect on the human spirit then this is the movie for you.
